The Book of James: Living a Faith Filled Life
I’ve been deep in the book of James lately, working on a Bible study that blends faith with creativity—an artistic, hands-on approach to living out the powerful truths James lays out. The more I read it, the more I find myself longing to live a life shaped by its wisdom. But that also leaves me asking: What does that actually look like?
Here’s a brief, spoiler-free overview. James, the half-brother of Jesus, wrote this letter to believers in Jerusalem, offering straightforward and practical instructions for how to live as followers of Christ. He speaks boldly about enduring trials with joy—yes, joy—because trials grow our faith, develop perseverance, and strengthen us for what’s ahead.
Imagine that: facing an incredibly difficult season and still choosing joy. Not because the hardship is pleasant, but because you understand that what it’s producing in you is worth it. Life isn’t always rainbows and cupcakes. Sometimes it’s falling into a ditch, getting drenched in rain, and stepping in cow patties on the way out. But James reminds us there's purpose even in that.
One of my favorite verses is James 1:22: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
If that’s not the clearest call to action, I don’t know what is. Don’t just read Scripture and move on like it’s good advice you’ll think about later. The Bible is the instruction manual given to us by our Creator. If you're facing a problem, chances are the answer is already in there.
James teaches us to tame our tongues, live out our faith with action, and stay present in today instead of getting caught up in the illusion of tomorrow. He reminds us that tomorrow isn’t promised, so today matters—and how we live it matters even more.
Now, I know that sounds a little idealistic. We live in a complex world, surrounded by real people with real problems, many of whom don’t share our faith or values. So how do we live out James in a culture that isn’t always welcoming to biblical truth?
Maybe it starts with the basics: just do what the Word says. Throughout Scripture, we’re given practical, actionable instructions—be kind to those in need, speak truth, avoid gossip, pray continually. Simple acts, when done with consistency and intention, make a powerful and lasting difference—in our lives, in others’, and for the Kingdom.
Here’s a reflection I want to leave you with this week:
What is one small change I can make today that could lead to long-term impact during my time on earth?
Maybe it’s holding your tongue when that one coworker (you know the one) gets under your skin. Maybe it’s going through your closet and finally giving those never-worn clothes to someone who actually needs them. Or maybe it’s committing to find a church home and serving on Sundays—not just attending, but becoming part of the body.
We all have the ability to make a difference during our time here. Don’t let it go to waste. It starts with one choice, one act of obedience, one small step of faith.
Live a life that, when you one day stand before the Father, He will say, “Well done, my faithful servant.” Because I truly believe each of our days should be spent seeking to bring Him joy—until He returns to take us home.
